Pretty as a picture inside and out, delightful 16th Century inn serving excellent traditional English food and ale, with a great selection of wine.

Sunday 13 July 2008
Bad - no reservation, bland soup, frozen prawns, dry shepherds pie, dry chilli, 3 small pieces of chicken in the thai curry, dolmio sauce for the pasta
Good - quirky pub, real ale, good location
This was sunday 7pm, we were the first there, it was quiet, they could've made more effort.
Not going back and not recommending. Have complained.

I have visited the pub with my parents on 3 occasions. The pub itself is characterful, however the service is so bad that after the third bad episode we resolved to never go there again and I decided that a complaint was in order. The manager who seems to frequent the bar area, brought the PDQ machine to the table so that we could make 2 separate payments for the meal. My father is not from the UK and is not familiar with these machines. He made a mistake on entering the amount(he enterd his pin number instead of the amount). The manager was so short tempered - he could see my father's pin number and sarcastically loudly announced the pin number to everyone at the table (everyone else in the restaurant heard as well - it's a very small restaurant). Absolutely depiscable and embarrassing for my father.
All the waitresses we've had (it may have been the same one - blonde ponytail) have given the impression that they're in a rush and just want to get you out as soon as possible. Without our even opening our mouths to say hello, with the tone of her voice she firmly 'let us know' she was not going to go out of her way for us.
I can take bad service once - even twice, but now that it's happened three times it's obviously a permanent issue. I will make it my mission to ensure that no one I know visits this restaurant. Nowadays we have to spend a good £15/20 per meal in a PUB, we should at least get friendly service with a smile if we're going to pay these prices.
The Sunday 'hog roast' was like a school meal. Dry, no gravy with some disappointing salads. However, their beef roast was very good the first time I visited.

We had a table booked for 4pm yesterday for 4 adults and a child at The Lamb in Henley on Thames. On our journey, which we were travelling 40 minutes to try The Lamb, we had car trouble and we were waiting for it to be sorted, we telephoned to explain this and see if it would be okay to be half an hour or so late. We understand that it is a very busy day and this may not have been possible but instead of getting a polite answer along those lines my husband didn't even get to finish his sentence he was hung up on!? He managed to say the words 'We can't make it right now....' called back to again be shouted at and told not to come to 'MY' pub again and that we would be charged and hung up on again.

This is disgusting behaviour and very disappointing. It is not worth me phoning to speak to the landlord Will again as I will no doubt get the same treatment, I have emailed him to complain. Looking at reviews on the Lamb on the internet, it looks like we are not the only ones that have comments on the rudeness and arrogance of the landlord.

It is very disappointing when their is a famous name behind a restaurant, we were looking forward to trying it on Mother's Day. It was unfortunate that we had problems getting there, or maybe not if that was the welcome we would have had! As we all know not everything runs on time, people are late, circumstances that you can't be there at all, we had the decency to phone and keep him up to date, if he couldn't fit us in a bit later then he could have politely said, but to not let someone speak and shout and hang up, he shouldn't be working with the public.

We have had two or three fairly good meals here though there has generally been something wrong - usually that part of the order was forgotten or arrived when we were halfway through the course. Today, most things were wrong. A silent waitress who apparently spoke virtually no English slammed down our cutlery and menus and left us for about 10 mins without any attempt to show us the "specials" or offer us a drink.
When a different waitress did deign to serve us, she was somewhat attitudinal and you felt you were a bit of a nuisance for being there. On prompting she produced the specials board and on further prompting went off to get us some drinks. My pint of bitter turned out to be a pint of lager and when it returned as the bitter it was meant to be it bore a generous threequarter inch head of froth. This basically works out at an enticing five pints for the price of six.
The soup was nice enough but it was served with that tasteless, cloying, part-baked white bread you get from the supermarket that always remains an alarming pasty white colour - not what you expect from someone who is allegedly a top chef.
The Hungarian goulash was of good typical pub standard although, as a previous reviewer says, the potato was Smash and was only warm by virtue of having hot goulash slopped over it. As usual the buttered peas did not arrive until we were halfway through the goulash, perhaps they had been defrosting as they were clearly Captain Birdseye's finest.
No one asked if we enjoyed it, just as well. When it came to paying, the only way of expressing a view was to keep the tip for ourselves, but after all we had done most of the work, so we felt we deserved it.
It is a very nice pub though. Shame about the service and, increasingly....the food. I know it prides itself in being "no nonsense" but the word nonsense seems to have been replaced by "effort".
There is a lot of competition in this area. So we won't need to trouble them again in a hurry.
